I've made the trip with others with only one stop, but to me it wasn't worth it as I spent almost the whole day after the trip sleeping, might as well have been well-rested and had a safer journey.
I know it isn't flying but that's my two cents on long distance travel while operating heavy machinery :. The nice thing about those flights is that you can get up every once in a while to stretch and take care of any other "physiological needs". The soaring conditions were great and I could have easily gone a few hours more, but my bladder was screaming for mercy and 5 hours is way too long to have to sit in one position. I don't fly more than 3 hour legs for all of the reasons listed above, plus you can get pretty stiff after a couple of hours.
Flying a type of plane is similar to motorcycle riding. You can not move around very much at all. Back in the 70s when we owned a L with long range tanks, we logged several 7 trip legs of more than 4 hours, the longest being 4. We flew with young kids back then, so Mom must have been kept busy with enroute diaper changes. With our current bird, sans long range tanks and young kids , we've still logged many trip legs of 3. Our longest flying days have been in excess of 9 hours, with the longest being Beats the heck out of driving!
Way back when, I could do anything for as long as I wanted to. Way back now, I can't do anything for very long. I plan everything around resting, leg stretching, peeing and sleeping. Eating and drinking I just sip on water for obvious reasons during flight.
So take food and drink with you. I wish I could go for as long as my plane can. Now to the post at hand. Over water I would never sleep on my break. I just couldn't do it. Where you are coming from weather could be your biggest enemy. All I can add is plan, plan, and plan. Then plan some more for alternates during flight because you might have to deviate, deviate, deviate. See you two next year and I want to hear all about your flight.
You will have stories to tell. Good luck on your trip. Be careful and safe. Originally Posted By: Jon Heckendorf. First leg was 3. I appreciated not having to worry about the airplane while I tried to rest up for the next long day of flying.. The overnight was a little daunting. It dawned on me that I was alone in Ohio, and I had gotten myself there by virtue of an airplane that I had flown.
The winds to the west were starting to pick up. The storms were two days away. Was that too much wind for me? Should I turn back? No way! I had to make it. I relaxed and took a look at the TAFs. That wind was right down the runway at both of my destinations and both had crosswind runways. The aloft winds were not extreme and the nearest cloud was forecast to be about miles away from my route.
With a flight like this, what is the worst case scenario? I might have to stop somewhere and adjust my plans? So what? Neither I nor the airplane HAD to be anywhere at any particular time. So, filed some flight plans, topped off the complimentary crew car and head back to the airport and took off for Illinois. I purposely filed IFR direct to Indianapolis before I would make the turn towards the south and make a direct line towards Oklahoma. I had never flown over this part of the country before and wanted to see as much as I could.
The highly-publicized flight in clocked in 1, hours of continuous flight, taking off at McCarran Airfield in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 4, , and landed back on the same airfield on February 7, Impressively, the Cessna has a fairly solid track record when it comes to safety.
As a top choice for many trainers and aspiring pilots, the Cessna is relatively easy to fly and land. This is about half of the industry average rate of 1. A Cessna S has a maximum gross weight capacity of 2, pounds. Exactly how much passenger weight you can carry aboard will depend on:. Tim Morgan , a commercial pilot, used a specific example: if your Cessna S has an empty weight of 1, pounds, and you have a full tank of fuel about 37 gallons, which weighs some pounds , you then have pounds left for passengers and bags.
In an interview with Popular Mechanics, F pilot Justin Lee shares what he almost always gives out as advice for aspiring aviators looking to pilot the most advanced fighters on the planet: the path to flying fighters often starts behind the single-prop of a
