King Lear announces his plan to divide his kingdom into three and give equal parts of it to each of his three daughters and their husbands to rule over. Before they can have their part of the kingdom, he asks his daughters to publicly declare how much they love him. Investigate the dividing the kingdom scene. Kent is banished. Edmund reveals his plan. In a soliloquy, Edmund confides in the audience that he feels it is unfair to be treated differently from his brother just because his mother was not married to Gloucester, and because he is younger than Edgar.

Edmund is determined to change things and manages to fool his father into believing that Edgar is plotting against him. Edgar believes Edmund. Edmund convinces Edgar that their father is angry with him but that he will try to help. Goneril grows impatient. Kent, as we've already hinted, is also notable for speaking honestly, which is a pretty rare in King Lear. Kent's not afraid to be blunt when he tells Lear he's a fool for believing that Goneril and Regan care about him or, when he tells Cornwall that he doesn't like the looks of his face.

This is a pretty risky thing to do, especially given Cornwall's penchant for plucking out the eyes of his enemies. In Shakespeare's play, it turns out that having a big mouth is a good thing—we might even say it's a noble quality. The first thing we learn about Gloucester is that he is an adulterer, having fathered a bastard son, Edmund. His fate is in many ways parallel to that of Lear: he misjudges which of his children to trust. He appears weak and ineffectual in the early acts, when he is unable to prevent Lear from being turned out of his own house, but he later demonstrates that he is also capable of great bravery.
