Great Danes are a breed that came about through a mix of two other tough breeds- the Mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound. Irish Wolfhounds and Mastiffs are both very large dogs and due to their anatomy, they passed on some great traits to the Great Dane. Great Danes are able to run fast because of this combination of speed and agility from the Mastiffs and the Irish Wolfhounds.
Great Danes are fast enough to catch, boars, deer, and sometimes bears. They are not only quick, but they are strong. Great Danes cannot run as fast when they are little. If their exercise routine is too much it can harm their bones. The speed in which they grow can sometimes make their bones more brittle and they may also have joint problems. In comparison to the other dog breeds, the Great Dane is actually pretty fast.
It does rank with the faster dogs though and has an impressive speed compared to smaller dogs. The Anatomy of a Great Dane is relatively the same as any other dog. However, the variation of sizes in bones and muscles is different which makes for a more long-legged dog breed. Great Danes have long legs and when they run their legs can cover more ground.
